Microwave Water Safety

Post these precautions near your microwave oven for safe heating:

* Follow all instructions in your owner’s manual regarding heating times. In general, don’t heat water or any liquid in a mug for more than 2 minutes.

* Before heating a container of clear liquid, add something to it: a wooden stirring stick, instant coffee, or a tea bag (though not the kind with metal staples). This helps break surface tension and will allow the liquid to bubble and release steam. (Superheating is far less likely to occur with stews and soups; solid ingredients usually break the surface tension.)

* Stir liquids (even water) before heating. This is another way to break surface tension.

* Let liquids sit in the microwave for 30 seconds after heating.
