Seasonal Tips on Planting - Summer

Lawns: Mow regularly, lowering the height of the blades, but leave grass longer during dry periods. Feed if growth is poor.

Flowers: Plant out half-hardy annuals and sow biennial seed in late spring/ early summer. Weed beds and water, mulch where possible. Liquid-feed bedding displays. Check plant supports.

Bulbs: Lift tulip bulbs and store.

Climbers: Prune non-flowering climbers.

Containers: Liquid-free hanging baskets weekly and pots according to growth.

Trees, shrubs and hedges: Prune shrubs that flower before midsummer right after flowering. Trim vigorous and formal hedges, including conifers, in early and late summer.

Vegetable and fruit garden: Sow squash in situ in early summer, plant out young vegetable plants and transplant brassicas. Harvest crop regularly. Plant new strawberry bed. Prune trained fruit trees. Prune stone fruit. Harvest cherries and berries.
